I don't think any other tank would look correct on your 'A' , I have had both a 'U' and a 'W' and the tanks are not the same . I agree with cspargo there are lots of talented guys that will cut the bottom out of the tank and restore it.
It will be good value to have your existing tank repaired. Beware of subtle differences year to year. We substituted a '93 tank for our '92 and found that the '93 should have had different thickness rubber blocks under it. So we got some frame/tank scares where the '93 tank rubbed our frame. We now have dedicated rubber blocks unique to each tank. We can recommend an excellent panel beater here in Cincinnati; not cheap, but excellent.
We have had several repairs between our two tanks and wear them in raw aluminum.
