After a few phone calls, I was able to speak with a technical representative from Motul. He indicated that the oils are indeed different, and ideally they should not be substituted for each other. The idea is that component loading and temperature levels are different. Most roadracers have done some off-roading and can picture this. Should have posted this sooner - sorry.

i've used both. fwiw, you will not be able to differentiate on any practical level. JMO.
and, i'd be curious with whom you spoke. if the convo wasnt in French, you didnt speak with anyone whose input i'd take as technical gospel.... the folks in the US are really just distributors.
as a point of reference, i think their stuff is absolutely awesome; and i've been sponsored by motul for years b/c i like their stuff. just dont underestimate the influence of marketing in how this stuff is presented.
