...them shiny thangs sure are purty...
Tools for pulling / pressing bearings ?
a d v e r t i s e m e n t>
Doing some winter maintenance, I found a bad bearing and corresponding bushing in the Swingarm linkage. One of the needles was badly worn and the same spot on its bushing.
I want to replace all 3 of these bearings, as I have time in the winter. I have a blind bearing puller which works very well on engine bearings, but didn't grab hold of this.
What's a good tool for these and other bearings, like the steering head. I'm thinking press?
Thanks for any tool advice, I've used the hammer method but if there's a better way?

the link bearings aren't blind (iirc), so you can just push them out pretty easily w/ just a press. the bearings in the swingarm are a bitch: they are blind and rollers, which are always a good challenge. i've never gotten one out in one piece.... ymmv. i use the blind puller, but there is just so little for it to grab...
for install, definitely recommend a press for both blind and thru locations. in a pinch, you can rig up something suitable w/ some threaded rod, fender washers, and a couple nuts.

Thanks Vince,
You have a harbor freight 20 ton press correct? Can you get the Swingarm in there to get the linkage bearing on the Swingarm? Is it big enough for most bearings?

i dont use the press for the swingarm, i use the threaded rod approach. just a little easier from a practical perspective. but, i do use it for lots of other bearing installs. definitely has enough pressure; for sure.
